bramble cocktail – the UK’s favorite alcoholic mix.
Bramble cocktail is mentioned for its balanced taste of berries with hints of juniper in the aftertaste, and strength – 20-22% vol. Translated from English Bramble – “blackberry”. This is one of the UK’s favorite alcoholic mixes.
Historical information for bramble cocktail
The Bramble cocktail was invented in 1984 by London bartender Richard “Dick” Bradsell, who then worked at the city’s famous Fred’s Club.
Bramble’s recipe is based on an old untitled cocktail of Dutch gin (Jennifer), raspberry syrup, lemon juice, and sugar. This combination has been known for a long time, but was not popular due to a poor balance of sweet and sour parts with a pronounced preponderance of sweetness.
Replace Bradsell Dutch gin for Plymouth gin (a variety of dry London) and use blackberries instead of blueberries. Visitors loved the new cocktail, and thanks to the club’s popularity, the recipe was quickly learned throughout the UK, and then in the world. Bradsell did not pay attention to the name and created a beautiful legend, and even called his new cocktail “The Bramble” – “Blackberry”.
Bramble is now listed as official cocktails by the International Bartenders Association (IBA) and in the New Age beverage category.

Composition and proportions:
- gin (dry London or Plymouth) – 45 ml;
- blackberry liqueur (champure or creme de more) – 20 ml;
- lemon juice – 20 ml;
- sugar syrup (equal parts of water and sugar) – 15 ml;
- crushed ice
- blackberries (can be frozen) – 2 pieces (for decoration);
- Lemon slice for garnish.
The original recipe uses Plymouth gin, but it can be replaced without losing quality with dry London, such as Gordons or Beefeater. Any alcoholic drink made from blackberries (the French drink is often called “creme de mauri”) or raspberry-blackberry champeur will do.
In the classic version, the cocktail is prepared using the bilde method (mixing in a serving glass). It is interesting, in this case, that this is not the best solution, since all the components have very different density, as a result of which it is difficult to mix without a shaker. Therefore, many bartenders shake the gin, juice, and syrup in an ice shaker and pour into a serving glass, then add the blackberry liqueur and stir.
